This is England: 5 Shots analyses

...

The main character of the film is shown first here (young boy). This is on a housing estate (council houses) in England, which are quite small, old fashioned and aesthetically displeasing in most places; this is denoted from the house being terraced, not detached. The bike left in the garden connotes that the neighbourhood is safe and there isn’t much crime to be aware of (unusual of this kind of area). Extreme long shot of house and garden. From the clothes the boy is wearing you can connote that the setting is in the 1980's, creating verisimilitude for this time period. The working class stereotype is very negative.

Two shot/medium long shot of the shop owner scolding the young boy for not buying the magazine he was reading in the shop and so therefore taking it off him and banding him from coming back into the shop ever again. The idea of a person with Asian or Indian origin owning a 'corner shop' in England is very stereotypically English. This connotes that the producers of the film are trying to make a stereotypical image of England for the audience.

This is clearly a school ground of some sort with lots of children waiting around talking to each other before school starts. By the outfits/costumes and style the school children have you can connote that the film is set in the 1980’s. Bird’s eye view, extreme long shot of school ground.

This is a mid shot of the young boy showing fear in his body language and facial expressions. There is also high key lighting to represent the comedy/drama genre. He can hear the other boy he had a fight with get beaten by the headmaster, so he is fearful of it happening to him next. By the clothes he is wearing the time/setting is established again (1980's).

Extreme long shot of the tunnel walkthrough where a group of boys are sitting hanging out and with the main character about to walk through it. The boys are wearing doc martens, flannel shirts, denim jeans and bomber jackets to connote the 1980’s and the overall style of English boys from the 1980’s. Also, their clothes connote rebels who skive off school (connoted from how they aren’t wearing a uniform). There is graffiti on the walls also connoting that there are rebels and misbehaviour. Also, it connotes that this area is an area for this kind of activity.
